Hibernian 2-0 Motherwell

Scott Brown and Abdessalam Benjelloun fired in second half goals to give Hibs a third win over Motherwell this term.

An appalling first half passed without incident and, after the break, Hibs goalkeeper Andrew McNeil made a great block to thwart Kevin McBride.

On 66 minutes Scott Brown was set up by Ivan Sproule to strike from 14 yards.

And, with the game in injury time, more good work from speedy winger Sproule allowed Benjelloun to stroke in a neat finish via the post.

Hibernian were looking to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat at Inverness last week and manager John Collins made three changes to his starting XI.

Out went defender Chris Hogg and strikers Ross Campbell and Benjelloun, to be replaced by Shelton Martis, Ivan Sproule and Lewis Stevenson.

The visitors had not played in three weeks due to bad weather.

David Clarkson was suspended, his place taken by Marc Fitzpatrick who dropped back to midfield, allowing Steven McGarry to link up with Scott McDonald in attack.

Trevor Molloy dropped to the bench with Darren Smith taking his place.

The home team forced three corners in the opening minutes but failed to trouble Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith.

The Fir Park side had lost nine goals to Hibs in their last two encounters and began in cagey style, flooding the midfield and in no hurry to get forward.

However, Hibs made life difficult for themselves with their play littered with errant passes.

The home fans were given a fright when keeper McNeil failed to deal with Martyn Corrigan's deep cross to the back post but Richie Foran's header across goal floated past harmlessly.

Hibs striker Steven Fletcher's acrobatic overhead attempt from 20 yards provided some much-needed excitement, even if Motherwell's Graeme Smith saved comfortably.

Benjelloun and Guillaume Beuzelin were introduced by Hibs at the interval, while Molloy was given his chance for the visitors.

Hibs midfielder Kevin Thomson blazed a long range shot over the crossbar after Stephen Craigan had gifted his opponent the ball.

Motherwell created a great opening but Foran failed to make good contact with Scott McDonald's cut-back and McNeil then made an impressive blocking save to deny McBride, on for Marc Fitzpatrick.

That let-off spurred Hibs on and Sproule picked up a Thomson pass to sprint down the left flank and roll the ball across to Brown to stab home.

Fletcher should have doubled the lead after good work from Benjelloun but the teenage striker ballooned his shot over the bar from 10 yards out.

But Benjelloun made the points safe for Hibs when he coolly slotted in a shot from close range after another blistering run from Sproule.

Hibernian 4-1 Aberdeen

Abdessalam Benjelloun came off the bench to score two goals in nine minutes as Hibernian came from behind to oust Aberdeen from the Scottish Cup.

Barry Nicholson had fired the Dons into an early replay lead following a fine through ball from Steve Lovell.

But a Steven Fletcher header and a superb Michael Stewart volley following Dean Shiels corners put Hibs in the driving seat by half-time.

And sub Benjelloun weaved his way to a double to secure a tie with Gretna.

Hibs had made four changes for the third-round tie, former captain Kevin Thomson dropping out along with Kevin McCann, Ross Campbell and the injured David Murphy.

Stewart - free from suspension - started along with Steven Whittaker, Ivan Sproule and Guillaume Beuzelin.

Aberdeen were without injured veteran striker Craig Brewster, so Lovell was preferred to Lee Miller up front.

But the early action was at the other end, with Beuzelin, Rob Jones and Scott Brown all threatening the Dons goal.

Aberdeen ought to have taken the lead when Darren Mackie broke clear and Lovell failed to get a touch on the perfectly-placed low cross to the front post.

But the striker made up for that moments later when he played a neat one-two on the edge of the box with Nicholson, who neatly placed the ball past goalkeeper Andrew McNeil.

The lead lasted less than three minutes, Fletcher rising above Andrew Considine to loop a header into the net.

A Lewis Stevenson back pass forced McNeil to pick the ball up eight yards from Hibs' goal.

But the goalkeeper spared their blushes by holding Scott Severin's powerful drive from the resulting free-kick.

And Hibs edged in front when Stewart met a Shiels corner on the volley that looped just under the crossbar from 18 yards.

It was a blow to the Dons, but it was Hibs who made the surprise half-time changes, with Stewart, who had been feeling ill, and Shiels making way for Thomson and Benjelloun.

The changes paid off immediately after Sproule dispossessed Nicholson on the halfway line.

A Thomson pass found Fletcher, whose first-time flick-on put Benjelloun clear and the Moroccan rounded the goalkeeper to slot home Hibs' third goal.

Benjelloun then picked up a long kick from McNeil before teasing Considine and firing low under Langfield from the edge of the box.

Aberdeen hopes of a revival ended when Clark missed a great chance by blasting over an open goal after McNeil had blocked from Nicholson at point-blank range.

Go on Da Hibs

Kilmarnock 0-2 Hibernian

Ivan Sproule and Steven Fletcher grabbed the goals as a youthful Hibs side edged out 10-man Kilmarnock.

In a scrappy game which saw few chances created by either side, Kilmarnock came closest with Gary Wales' early shot rebounding off the Hibernian post.

Dean Shiels wasted two glorious first-half opportunities for Hibs, blazing one over from just six yards.

But it was left to substitute Sproule and Fletcher to claim all three points with clinical second-half strikes.

In a tepid start to the match, Hibs forced a couple of early corners but the Ayrshire men defended stoutly, with defender Frazer Wright coping well with the aerial presence of Hibs' giant stopper Rob Jones.

Killie debutant Momo Sylla was finding space down the left in the opening minutes but his hopeful crosses were easily mopped up by the visiting defence.

Despite Hibs having the lion's share of the early possession it was Kilmarnock who nearly broke the deadlock after 20 minutes.

Striker Wales hammered a shot from 25 yards against the post with Hibs keeper Andrew McNeil grateful to see the ball rebound straight back into his arms.

This spurred Killie on to press for the opener as a much-changed Easter Road side, with five 19-year-olds in the starting line-up, struggled to get their passing game together.

The game remained scrappy but Hibs midfielder Shiels should have grabbed his ninth goal of the season five minutes before the break.

Jones was allowed to latch onto a David Murphy free-kick and head the ball into a packed penalty area.

Shiels pounced as the Killie defence hesitated but lashed his right-footed shot high over the bar from six yards.

Gary Hay's misdirected back-header to keeper Alan Combe nearly cost Killie dearly on the stroke of half-time but Shiels again scooped the ball over the onrushing Combe.

Hibs' boss John Collins made two changes to his inexperienced side at half-time, teenage striker Ross Campbell making way for Guillaume Beuzelin and Sproule replacing Kevin Thomson.

The substitutions paid off almost instantly with Sproule firing Hibs into the lead after 51 minutes.

After a fluid four-man move Beuzelin laid the ball off to the little Irish winger on the right-hand side of Killie's box and, as the home defence backed off, he rifled a shot high beyond the flailing Combe.

Kilmarnock became increasingly ragged as Hibs' confidence grew and Fletcher almost doubled the lead minutes later, heading just wide from a Lewis Stevenson cross with Combe stranded in no-man's land.

Sproule's direct running down the right flank continued to create havoc in the Killie defence and he forced Combe into a good save on the hour mark, Fletcher slamming the rebound over.

Stephen Whittaker came on for Shiels as Hibs attempted to consolidate control of the midfield.

Killie were dramatically reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to go when Wales picked up a second yellow card, catching Whittaker with a mistimed lunge.

And Fletcher sealed the win for Hibs with a cool finish three minutes from time after Stevenson's mazy run down the left.
