Gretna 0-1 Hibernian
A sweet volley from Steven Fletcher was enough to earn Hibs victory over struggling Gretna at Fir Park.
Rob Jones hit the crossbar with a header and the lively Filipe Morais went close with two shots as Hibs dominated the first hour.
Fletcher fired a cut-back from Lewis Stevenson past keeper Greg Fleming seven minutes into the second half.
The Premier League's bottom side rallied in the later stages, with James Grady going close with a lofted shot.
Gretna remain stranded at the wrong end of the table, while Hibs stay in third place - level on points with second-place Rangers and Dundee United in fourth.
It was one-way traffic in the opening 20 minutes, with the visitors pushing forward at every opportunity.
Morais tried his luck with two early strikes, the first pushed into the side-netting by Fleming, while the second whizzed narrowly wide.
Jones missed a good headed chance and Fleming raced out to block bravely at the feet of Mickael Antoine-Curier, following a poor headed pass back from Danny Grainger.
The loose ball fell to Morais but the Portuguese winger blazed his shot high over the empty net.
Antoine-Curier had to hobble off and Hibs had to make a second first-half change when Guillaume Beuzelin was hurt, with Clayton Donaldson and Ross Chisholm coming on.
The loss of Beuzelin from central midfield dulled the visitors' early threat and Gretna began to get a foothold in the game.
With 35 minutes gone, Hibs captain Jones got on the end of a Morais corner only to see his header crash off the crossbar.
Hibs again took the initiative after the interval and Fleming had to tip away another strike from Morais and Chisholm fired inches wide from distance before the breakthrough goal came on 52 minutes.
Stevenson did well to keep a deflected shot from Donaldson in play and cut the ball back for Fletcher to ram home a splendid volley.
Gretna improved significantly after going behind and substitute David Graham injected some much-needed urgency to their attack.
Gavin Skelton poked an effort wide and Grady sent a shot high over the crossbar for the home team.
Fleming awkwardly kept out a sliced effort from Brian Kerr after a lightning break from the last of Hibs' substitutes Alan O'Brien.
Gretna finished strongly and Grady managed to lift a shot over the huge frame of goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay but his effort bounced into the side-netting.

Hibernian 1-1 Hearts (Sheesh)
Hibernian lost further ground on Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic after being held to a draw at home in a pulsating Edinburgh derby with Hearts.
Visiting defender Christophe Berra was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he barged Lewis Stevenson but then deflected a corner into his own net.
Hearts struck back just after the break when Christian Nade diverted home an Andrius Ksanavicius header.
Hibs' Steven Fletcher was denied when Andrius Velicka cleared off the line.
The point moved Hibs into third spot but six adrift of Celtic after the weekend's games.
Fletcher and Guillaume Beuzelin had returned from injury, while Filipe Morais was available again after suspension.
Merouane Zemmama, Clayton Donaldson and Ross Chisholm dropped out - and that was matched by the three changes made by Hearts.
Calum Elliot, Ruben Palazuelos and the injured Marius Zaliukas missed out following the fine CIS Cup win over Celtic.
Eggert Jonsson came into midfield, while Nade returned from suspension to partner midweek two-goal hero Velicka.
But the switch to two up front and four in midfield could not prevent Hibs taking the early initiative and Fletcher's 20-yard drive sliced a few yards wide.
Hearts responded and Andrew Driver sent a header a foot over the crossbar following a Robbie Nielson cross.
Driver turned provider and Velicka sent a drive into the side-netting from 10 yards from the winger's low cross to the near post.
Hibs ought to have been rewarded for their fine, passing football with a penalty after 13 minutes, when Berra bodychecked Stevenson.
But justice was done four minutes later, when Berra deflected the ball into his own net from a Morais corner under pressure at the near post from Rob Jones, with television pictures being inconclusive about whether the Hibs defender had been the one to direct the ball towards goal.
Berra redeemed himself with a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Mickael Antoine-Curier.
And it was out-rushing goalkeeper Anthony Basso's turn to save Hearts with a fine one-handed stop that prevented Fletcher chipping home a second after the striker broke clear.
Yves Ma-Kalambay's legs came to the rescue of Hibs seconds later to thwart Velicka's 25-yard drive after Hearts applied some sustained pressure as the first half came to a pulsating conclusion.
Hearts continued where they left off by equalising 46 seconds into the second half.
Driver's cross was headed towards goal by Ksanavicius and Nade deflected it past Ma-Kalambay from five yards.
It was end-to-end stuff now and desperate clearances by Basso and Ibrahim Tall denied Hibs, while Driver squandered a good shooting chance for Hearts.
Velicka cleared a Beuzelin header off Hearts' line and a Fletcher effort entered the net only to be ruled out for a foul.
Mauricio Pinilla turned a Ksanavicius cross wide from six yards as neither side could break the derby deadlock.
